Scotland's Feb Record Still Stands But Durham's Doesn't

While Aberdeen got close but failed within a degree, the UK's warmest  location appears to be south of the border at Durham where it reached 17.4C. This WAS A RECORD!

Cloudy skies over Aberdeen (Photo Courtesy of TripExtras)

The atmosphere was looking perfect with the high positioned over Ireland, strong enough thickness values (strength of high) to support raw temps uniformly at between 11-14C widely, a deep layered southwesterly air flow blowing across the Highlands which would downslope onto the Aberdeenshire coast, further enmhancing the warmth locally but there was one key ingedient missing and that was sunshine.

This means of course that the record of 17.9C set in Aberdeen remains standing but it did get close and given the fact that the airport topped 17.2C with generally cloudy skies for the most part, that to me suggests that had there been no clouds, then I think my much anticipated 18-20C would have been highly likely and we would have quite possibly seen not only the Scottish February record fall but the UK's as well which stands at 19.7C recorded at Greenwich.

Another Mild Week For UK, Cold In Eastern Europe, Turning Stormy Over SE, Significant Cooldown Through Continent From Weekend Onwards

SCOTLAND MAY BREAK THEIR FEBRUARY RECORD OF 17.9C TOMORROW!

The unusually mild weather will once again, like we saw last week, build back into the UK over the next 24 hours as the ridge raises heights over the UK. With the centre of high pressure positioned over Ireland tomorrow, it is northeast Scotland which may be looking at very warm February temperatures with a substantial southwest to westerly flow blowing across the Grampians. If enough sunshine reaches the ground, combined with the winds which will downslope the east face of the mountains before reaching the coast then I think there is a decent shot here at Scotland reaching a new February benchmark for warmth. Another Week Of Above Normal Temps Ahead For UK & W. Europe

The stubborn Azores high will continue to keep away any true active weather this upcoming week with glimpses of unsettled weather crossing Scotland. It will be a generally wet and blustery day across Scotland tomorrow but by Tuesday, Scotland joins the rest of the UK in more settled conditions. If your anywhere from the Midlands southwards, you'll know well how little proper rain you've had and as well as that, the sunshine is favouring you. Those heights are too strong across central and southern UK and thus skies have lighter winds, somewhat brighter skies and milder air.
This weekend saw a brief flattening of the high and this allowed more cloud and a slight reduction in temps, however, the south and east still saw plenty of sunshine and temps up to between 10-13C, that's still above normal while the northern UK, while it's somewhat cloudier, a good deal wetter and at times, windy, it is still around normal or even abopve normal temperaturewise. It's the persistency in the high which is keeping any sort of cooler air away and therefore I am beginning to think that this February may end up one of the warmest.

Certainly this upcoming week will help boost the monthly deficite as the high builds back into the UK and temps are likely to widely reach between 12-16C throughout much of the UK, including Scotland. I continue to believe that Wednesday may take a run at the 19.7C February record as the centre of the high shifts to the southeast of London which would help bring in those warming southwesterlies. The surface and upper charts support that and combined with strong heights (by Feb standards), combined with the effect of downslope warming and the much drier than normal soils, this is a real possibility, like anything however, this may change.

The rest of the week remains fairly settled with the high shifting slightly further east. The majority of the western continent looks to have a glorious mid to late week with good, widespread sunshine and mild temps. The clear skies and light winds at night may allow for frosts but certainly, from the UK to east Germany, Wednesday onwards is looking terrific.

Cooler Air To Be Short Lived As Azores High Rebuilds Into UK Fast Next Week

'TODAY'S FACEBOOK FORECAST'

UK-IRELAND WEATHER: Today will be a generally cooler day with highs ranging from 5-7C across Ire, NI, Scot & N. Eng, 7-13C from Grtr M'chester southwards. A weak front across S. Eng will keep thicker cloud lingering in places while another front across Scot will bring continued rain to W & SW Scot. Elsewhere it will be a case of interludes of sun and cloud.

Azores High Set To Return, May Bring Warmest February Temp On Record To UK By Tuesday/Wednesday

While temps have cooled this weekend following the balmy readings of late last week as the ridge gets squashed, it appears the models haven't let go of the warm theme for the UK just yet. Over the last couple of days they have persistently shown the return of the ridge back up into the UK by Tuesday and I am wondering whether 'heights' or thickness values may be slightly stronger than what we saw last week. What does this mean? Well, it could suggest that if this were to be true, the overall warmth of this bubble of circulating air may be greater.

An important thing to look at is the position of the high pressure centre as this can be important in determining the direction in which the wind blows over the UK. Incidentally, the centre shows to be positioned just south, east of London and this, given the size of the high brings winds widely across England out of the southwest, similar to last Thursday when the high topped 18C in several areas.

So, given adequate sunshine as well as possible downsloping off hills and of course the ongoing drier than normal soils, this points to yet another day or two of late April/early May conditions. Right now, I am shooting for a widespread 14-17C across England with a potential pocket of 17-20C. A reading of 20C by the end of Wednesday which I believe would be the best day of seeing such a temp reading would make for the warmest February day in UK history, besting the 19.7C high set at Greenwich in 1988.

'Stacked' SW Flow Combined With Stronger Sun Angle, Downslope Effect And Drought Will Force Highs To 17 or 18C Across Parts Of UK Today

MULTIPLE HIGHS TOPPED 18C TODAY!

MET OFFICE: It has been an exceptionally mild day across many parts of the United Kingdom. The warmest place was Coleshill (Warwickshire) with 18.7 °C, closely followed by Market Bosworth (Leicestershire) with 18.3 °C and Santon Downham (Suffolk) with 18.2 °C.

'TODAY'S FACEBOOK UPDATE'

UK-IRELAND WEATHER: Unseasonably mild day across the board with 13-15C (55-59F) widely, Rain mostly confined to north, west Scot. Accompanied by this warm SW flowing air will be thick cloud and low lying mist and murk. Normal btw is between 6-9C (43-49F)! 1-2 spots may top 17-18C (63-64F).

If you notice from today's upper chart off the ECMWF, heights are fairly strong over southern, central England, enough to support 12-14C temps even without any wind but when you push warmth from the Azores in a 'stacked' fashion from upper to lower atmosphere and at the surface, your enhancing the warming effect and so the temps, rather than be in the 12-14C range given the general air mass in place on it's own, can jump to 13-15C simply by transporting air from a warm source region into that already mild air. Now, further warming can and will take place for areas located east and northeast of hills as those surface and mid-level southwest winds will cross hills and ultimately downslope on the other side (lee side) and as they drop down the other side, they will compress and actually warm the air further! So pockets of 15-17C is likely and I believe somewhere could just manage to reach 18C, a maximum I have been shooting for since Sun.

What I believe will help some places warm, is not only the SW wind, downsloping or warmer sunshine at this time of year, but the ongoing drought conditions which can, with sunshine, heat the lower atmosphere quicker!

UK Cooldown Over Weekend (Mostly In North) But Warmer Air Returns Next Week While Eastern Europe Grows Cold Again!

Heights lower over this weekend, especially across Scotland but the current models suggest more high pressure influence once again into earl and particularly mid next week. As I see it now, I wouldn't be surprised if we spoke of similar temps by next Wednesday as we are today across similar areas. Further east, notice when looking at the chart immediately above, eastern Europe looks to see another decent blast of very cold air at the same time western Europe sees more influence by the persistent and dominant Azores high.

Storm System Draws In Conflicting Air Masses, Sparks Heavy Snow On Rear, Pumps Unseasonable Warmth Ahead Of It

A storm system pushing into the Ohio Valley this afternoon has be responsible in dragging a reservoir of cold air down on it's backside, enough to spark two areas of heavy snow, one across Colorado where upwards of 17,000 remain without power across the Denver area and a second area of heavy snow is impacting North and South Dakota.

HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED FROM CHICAGO TO CLEVELAND

As this system tracks east tonight, and with the precipitation band pushing north from the OH/TN valleys, an area of heavy snow is expected to break out from Chicago through Detroit and into Cleveland. 5-10 inches is possible.

FEELING MORE LIKE APRIL THAN FEBRUARY FROM TEXAS TO NEW JERSEY

As for areas south and east of the cold front, the air today is feeling more like April rather than the last 10 days of February. While an area from Texas to South Carolina warms under sunshine and southerly winds into the upper 70s to even low 80s, the Mid-Atlantic may approach 70 degrees while up as far north as Philadelphia, we could see 65 degrees here. Upper 50s for New York City.

This morning, thanks to the seperation of the jet stream, Buffalo, NY recieved 3 inches of snow overnight while Boston, MA, on the warm side was a balmy 47 degrees this morning.

Areas of snow will clear out this afternoon across parts of upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire into Maine while, amazingly the warmth pushing up into Philly.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT ACROSS SOUTH/SOUTHEAST TODAY AND ESPECIALLY TONIGHT

There is clearly concern as we progress through the afternoon and evening hours as the unusual warmth and humidity builds across the South ahead of the cold front, it's as this cold front sweeps in, drawing all this energy up into the colder upper levels where thunderstorms will form fast and furious. If the atmosphere in this region doesn't recieve the dry air from the north, keeping it 'uncapped', then, CAPE values soar and with very warm, moist surface air, colder air from the northwest spreading up and over this warmth, then lapse rates increase to dangerous levels. It's this setup which helps form thunderstorms fast and with spin created by the storm's circulation, these strong lines or clusters of thunderstorms firing along and ahead of the front could turn supercell as they spin with the atmosphere. There is a potential for some substantial severe weather breaking out, particularly from 4pm onwards.
